Why Use a Template?

There are many benefits of using a template for your joomla site, they are the easiest way of personalising your website whilst saving you time, money and effort. Although a custom template allows you total control of the look of your site, building a joomla theme from scratch requires an excellent understanding of PHP/XHTML and take a lot of time and effort to produce. Paying a web design company to do this for you could cost thousands. There are many sites on the internet with free Joomla templates available for download.

How to install a joomla template

Joomla allows you to install new templates to you site. You can install new templates to change the look of your actual site, the part your user see's; called the 'site template'. And you can install new templates to change the look of your admin section, this is the section you see when updating and maintaining your site.

Before you can install a new template to your joomla site you must have a template ready to be installed. You can search for free joomla templates on the net or you can make one/get one made from scratch. Download the template with all the files needed in a zip file. You can also download the needed files individually.

Log in to your joomla site's administration.

On the menu bar at the top of your administration panel, goto: Site -> Template Manager -> Site Templates.

Select New from the options.

Browse to your zip file, select it, Upload the zip file & Install it. Or select your indivisual files one by one and install them.

Once installed you need to publish the new template on your joomla site.

Select the radio button next to the template name that you just installed then click default from the menu.

Click: Site --> Preview --> In New Window. Template Installed.

Test your knowledge.
